Health insurance in Israel This article discusses health insurance in the nation of Israel. Israel has instituted a law for national healthcare ( Reisekrankenversicherung ) and this is also discussed. Israel, a Middle Eastern country, requires health insurance for all of its citizens. Healthcare in this country is provided by a national health care law which mandates health insurance for all Israelis. The health care provided by the country’s insurance programs is managed by companies that receive government funding. Israeli citizens are fortunate to live in the country with the world’s most progressive health insurance program. The health insurance program of Israel not only protects the health of its citizens, it funds massive amounts of research in the medical arena. History of Israel 1948 The current Israeli health insurance program is based on how health care was handled in the country during the years before the nation gained its freedom. Labor Unions organized agencies to oversee the health care of all citizens while the country lived under the British Mandate. At this time citizens were required to pay a small fee and all healthcare was covered. In the late 1980’s a commission was formed to find if the current healthcare options were working. The committee returned the new health insurance law in 1990. This new law provided for the healthcare of Israelis. By the mid 1990’s the National Health Insurance Law became a functioning reality in the state of Israel. All Israeli citizens were required to join a Health Maintenance Organization, (HMO), and had four to choose from. There exists one type of coverage for everyone and the law specifies which treatments and services the HMO must cover for Israeli citizens. The Health Ministry was given the power to oversee the HMO. The Health Ministry is required to determine if the HMO’s are functioning and working for the people of the country. They ensure that the health insurance program is funded by public means. No matter what the financial situation, every Israeli receives health insurance. Health insurance fund is supported and funded by state monies. Israeli’s can join any of the four HMO’s with or without pre-existing conditions. This is one of the big differences between the current system and the one used during the British Mandate. During the British Mandate there was only one option for citizens with certain conditions. Citizens now have the right to join any of the four HMO’s no matter financial situation or pre-existing conditions. Citizens also have the opportunity to change from one HMO to another each year if they dissatisfied with the service provided. Citizens also have the option to purchase an extra health care service that will cover treatments not covered by the basic health insurance program. The basic system, which is funded by the state, is usually enough coverage for most citizens. The Israeli Health insurance program ( Krankenversicherung USA ) covers the most of any HMO in today’s modern world. Israeli’s recognize the benefits’ of the health insurance program and make good use of the program. They are allowed to see doctors and specialist without a huge hassle and almost all of their needs are covered by their HMO.
