From Andy Hamilton, co-creator of drop the dead donkey, six episodes from the first two BBC radio 4 series of the fiendishly funny comedy - set in hell!
'One of the great comic creations of recent years' Sunday Telegraph
It's not easy being Satan. Thrown out of heaven by a vengeful, white-haired God - merely for daring to voice the concerns of middle management — he was condemned for all eternity to listen to Edith Piaf and Elvis Presley
Still, there are new arrivals to welcome - the Professor, an atheist whose unerring optimism is a nasty blow, and Thomas, chairman of a privatised water company (so vile that Judas Iscariot starts calling him the Guv'nor). Satan has to deal with a rebellion of his own from head demon Gary: he wants staff feedback sessions, more flexible rostering and wider access to nuns and virgins. And with human depravity on the increase, Hell's getting ever more crowded: time for a new assistant. Will Scumspawn get the job?
A fiery furnace of brilliant one-liners and biting satire, Old Harry's Game is the insider's guide to Hell. (Bet you didn't know God's real name was Nigel. )
One of the sharpest comedies ever
Jane from Chapel Hill, NC - 07 Mar 2007
This series is an absolute gem. Andy Hamilton's portrayal of a weary, sardonic Prince of Darkness will have you rolling in the aisles. Jimmy Mulville is on top form as the loathsome reprobate Thomas. James Grout's meandering, cheerily optimistic Professor is a joy, especially in later series when his widow's new love life causes his pain. Steven O'Donnell (first series only) is a scream as Gary, Satan's placidly sadistic right-hand demon who really enjoys his work. And in series two and later, Robert Duncan brings a whole new level to the show with his portrait of Scumspawn, a pitiful wretch who lives only for his master's favor.
Having listened to the series on BBC7, I can wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who loves dry wit, fierce banter and sharp characterizations. Empathy for the Devil is no small feat, but Andy Hamilton's crackerjack scripts pull it off. One question - why has the entire series not been released on audio CD? The first two volumes are selected episodes. We're getting series five complete, and series six is due to start recording - please, BBC, give us a box set!
