Giles Wemmbley Hogg Geht Zum FussballWeltmeisterschaft Weg!
A three-part World Cup special for BBC Radio 4
Transmits 6.30pm Thursdays from the 15th of June 2006
starring Marcus Brigstocke as Giles Wemmbley Hogg, zwei m’s zwei g’s.
He’s back! Budleigh Salterton’s most famous citizen, traveller and worldly guru knows nothing about football or Germany, but from the moment he decides to book a strolling holiday in the Schwarzwald (“because it’ll be nice and quiet this time of year”), he pitches headlong into the thrilling arena of The World Cup.
He may never have played football, but, he was Sports Monitor at school, (or as he puts it, “I was the only one allowed to touch the Master’s ballbag at Charterhouse”). Transmitting during the three weeks of the competition itself, Giles will be reporting from the competition whilst filling in his massive World Cup Wallchart** with coloured pens (“I was going to do all the Groups with different colours, but I accidentally spilt a bit of yellowy nog over Group E and Portugal, so it’s all got a bit confusing”). But interwoven with all this, Giles inevitably finds himself on a series of baffling adventures and mishaps, involving, amongst other things, the Iranian squad, a stolen World Cup, a very big cake and fifty sticks of Leipzig rock. And to make matters worse, his fiancée Bella is coming out to meet him in Nuremberg to help plan their forthcoming wedding. As is her mother.
Giles Wemmbley Hogg is written by Marcus Brigstocke & Jeremy Salsby, with additional material by newbie wunderkind Graeme Garden.
It’s produced by David Tyler for Pozzitive. His radio credits include Armando Iannucci’s Charm Offensive, Another Case Of Milton Jones, Jeremy Hardy Speaks To The Nation, The 99p Challenge, Deep Trouble, Radio Active & Dial “M” For Pizza (with Brenda Blethyn & Robert Bathurst). His TV credits include Paul Merton – The Series, Spitting Image, Absolutely, The Paul Calf Video Diary, Three Fights Two Weddings & A Funeral, Coogan’s Run, The Tony Ferrino Phenomenon, The Comic Side Of 7 Days and exec producing Victoria Wood’s dinnerladies.
Previous casts over the three series have included Catherine Tate, Jessica Stephenson, Doon McKichan, James Fleet, Bert Kwouk, Neil Dudgeon and Tom Goodman-Hill
“Not since I first heard Alan {Partridge have I felt so sure that I was in the presence of an immortal” – Dave Sexton, The Sunday Telegraph
“Consistently funny & elegantly produced” – Simon Garfield, Mail On Sunday
“Hilarious spoof” – Time Out
