This story is based on the perspective of a 10 year old child - much like the TV show "The Wonder Years", told at a time when monsters and scary situations seemed far too real. I believe that the reason most horror stories do not have the realism and scare they used to have is because we've all grown up and realized that the bogeyman does not actually exist.
